DA: Investigators target online rental scams in wake of Camp Fire
The Butte County District Attorney’s Office has said scammers are using Craigslist to run fraudulent rental schemes in an attempt to bilk potential Camp Fire evacuees of their financial information.
District Attorney Mike Ramsey said investigators have found fraudulent posts on the classified advertising website listing homes for rent using photos taken from other, legitimate sources, such as real estate websites. The rental schemes can involve asking potential renters for cash down payments, and then additional financial information to run phony credit checks. read more
